Digital Dental X-Rays: Safe, Gentle, and Precise

Digital Dental X-Rays

BY DR. AZI A. ARDAKANI, DDS

As your little hero's mouth grows and changes, visual dental exams can't reveal everything we need to know. Digital dental x-rays provide a valuable diagnostic tool to uncover hidden concerns beneath your little one's tooth surfaces or gum line. At Little Heroes of Orange County Pediatric Dentistry, we invest in the most recent digital x-ray technology to provide our young patients with comfortable, safe, and precise care!

What Are the Benefits of Digital Dental X-Rays?

Dental x-rays have been used for over 100 years to diagnose dental problems not visible to the naked eye. Today's modern dental x-rays use digital sensors to capture high-resolution images of the mouth and oral structures rather than using traditional dental x-ray film. The tiny digital sensors capture images in seconds without having to bite down on awkward plastic plates, translating to a more comfortable experience for your child and less time in the dentist's chair.

Digital x-rays help us detect problems in their earliest stages, like tooth decay between teeth, gum disease, new decay under fillings, bone loss, cysts, or impacted or missing teeth. We can enhance the images to show the finest details, allowing Dr. Azi to diagnose conditions in their earliest stages. That will ensure your child receives precise and prompt treatment and help prevent minor problems from progressing and requiring extensive treatments down the road.

How Often Will Your Child Need Digital X-Rays?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), children benefit from diagnostic x-rays once a year. If, however, your little hero has tooth pain, a cavity, or any other concern, our team may recommend additional digital x-rays for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Are Digital Dental X-Rays Safe?

Today's digital dental x-rays produce 80-90 percent less radiation compared to traditional x-ray equipment with their already minimal radiation exposure. To put things in perspective, a trip on a plane or a day of fun in the sun can expose your child to higher radiation levels per year than digital dental x-rays.

It is easy to see how safe digital dental imaging is compared to everyday living. However, as an added layer of safety, we recommend digital dental x-rays only when necessary for your child and take all recommended precautions, including using lead aprons for protection.
