What Are Soft Tissue Dental Lasers?

Soft tissue dental lasers are a game changer in pediatric dentistry, offering numerous advantages over traditional surgical methods. They harness the power of intense, focused light to create tiny incisions or vaporize soft tissues like the gums, lips, or tongue without any making contact. Dental lasers produce an analgesic effect that eliminates the need for local anesthetics in most cases.

Our soft tissue laser has a natural sterilization effect, eradicating bacteria, viruses, and fungi, which lowers the risk of infections. It also minimizes post-operative pain and bleeding and enhances the healing process. Dental lasers allow us to provide gentle, comfortable treatments to your child.

What Are the Uses of Soft Tissue Lasers in Pediatric Dentistry?

At Little Heroes Pediatric Dentistry, we offer laser frenectomies to release tongue or lip ties, which occur when the lingual (tongue) or labial (upper lip) frenulum is too short or tight. That can lead to significant difficulties with breastfeeding, along with an elevated risk of tooth decay, inadequate spacing, orthodontic concerns, speech impediments, and digestive issues.

Traditional surgical frenectomies involve cutting or modifying the frenulum, usually under a local anesthetic. They typically require sutures to close the wound and may take some time to heal. Side effects may include pain, infection, or scarring.

Laser frenectomies, on the other hand, are minimally invasive surgical procedures that use a soft-tissue laser to vaporize the unwanted tissues. That means most children do not need anesthetics or stitches and should experience minimal to no bleeding or discomfort. There is also a lower risk of infection or scarring. Babies can usually resume nursing after the procedure.

Aside from laser frenectomies, we use our soft tissue laser to improve the appearance of a child's gums and to perform operculectomies, as requested by a referring orthodontist for band placement or teeth exposure. We can also remove excess gum tissues and perform other soft tissue reduction procedures, all with minimal to no discomfort, bleeding, or downtime!
